Since its inception, the Program has actively participated in a number of pesticide management activities including monitoring, public outreach and education and regional coordination.

The Program has prepared a Pesticide Management Plan describing a comprehensive approach to controlling pesticide related toxicity in urban runoff.  The Plan addresses minimizing the use of pesticides within municipal jurisdictions; outreach to residential and commercial users, pesticide retailers, municipal employees and special districts regarding less toxic pest control; and continued monitoring and regional coordination.  Completed  and/or on-going Pesticide Management Plan tasks include:

  • Development of a Pest Management Performance Standard (final version submitted March 1, 2002),

  • Workshop for pest control operators (November 4, 2003),
  • Workshop for municipal staff on the Pest Management Performance Standard, BMPs to protect water quality and process on developing an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) policy and program (March 20, 2002),

  • Workshop for pest control operators, municipal staff and school districts on IPM techniques (July 9, 2001),

  • Outreach to residential users through participation in regional ad campaigns and community events,

  • Implementation of an IPM store partnership program that educates store employees and consumers about less-toxic pest control at the point-of-purchase,

  • Funding of regional monitoring efforts, and

  • Coordination and participation with the Urban Pesticide Committee, BASMAA, and the California Stormwater Quality Association (CASQA) to address pesticide issues.

The status of all Pesticide Management Plan tasks are provided to the Regional Board each March and September.
